Who won game 1 of the world series
The Dodgers and Yankees entered the 2024 MLB postseason as the top seeds in their respective leagues. The Dodgers had home-field advantage in the series due to their better regular season win-loss record. https://sanmholisticcentre.com/ayurveda/ It was the 12th time in the Dodgers–Yankees rivalry that the teams have met in the World Series, but only the first instance since 1981. The teams had previously faced each other at least once per decade from the 1940s through the 1980s. The Yankees held a 6–1 edge in the World Series rivalry during the Brooklyn Dodgers/Subway Series era, and the teams were 2–2 following the Dodgers’ relocation to Los Angeles. In their 2024 World Series meeting, the Dodgers took a 3–0 series lead before losing Game 4 in New York. They would win their eighth World Series title the next day, coming back from a 5–0 deficit, a record for most runs to come from behind in a World Series clinching game.
But as we saw in Game 1, the Dodgers don’t die easily. Catcher Will Smith smacked a leadoff homer off Gil in the fifth, then Tommy Edman drew a walk. The Yankees went to their ‘pen, with ground-ball lefty Tim Hill summoned. The Dodgers put runners on the corners with one out and Freeman up to bat. Hill got the ground ball he wanted, but second baseman Torres’ toss to Volpe at the second-base bag to try to start a potential double play was a little high, and though Volpe’s subsequent throw to first was initially ruled to have beaten Freeman to the bag for the inning-ending DP, a replay review overturned it.
In the top of the first inning, after Shohei Ohtani’s leadoff walk, Freddie Freeman hit a two-run home run, tying a record by homering in his fifth straight World Series game going back to the 2021 World Series, where he appeared as a member of the Atlanta Braves. In the top of the third inning, Tommy Edman led off with a walk, advanced on a groundout and then scored on a single by Mookie Betts. The Dodgers threatened again in the fourth with runners at first and third and no outs, but the rally was thwarted when Gavin Lux was tagged out on a close play at home on an attempted squeeze bunt by Edman. In the bottom half of the inning, Giancarlo Stanton doubled and tried to score on Anthony Volpe’s single, but he was also cut down at the plate via an accurate throw by left fielder Teoscar Hernandez to keep the Yankees off the board.
College world series game today
A new college baseball champion has been crowned and it is the Tennessee Volunteers for the first time in school history. They prevailed Monday over the Texas A&M Aggies in Game 3 of the championship round of the College World Series, 6-5.
Home to the NCAA Division I Men’s College World Series and Creighton Bluejays baseball program, Charles Schwab Field Omaha seats 24,000 and features a 360-degree walk-around concourse for a perfect view of the field.
The Aggies plated two runs in the eighth to shrink the score to 6-3 before Tennessee reliever Kirby Connell struck out two batters who each represented the tying run. They drove in two more in the ninth, but couldn’t pull off the final comeback.
The College World Series started last week with eight teams, but Virginia, NC State, North Carolina, Kentucky, Florida State and Florida were knocked out before Tennessee and Texas A&M advanced to the finals.
Following a scoreless frame from sensational southpaw Evan Aschenbeck, the Aggies cut Tennessee’s lead to just one run following a Jackson Appel RBI single and a run-scoring wild pitch. But with two outs and the bases clear, Aaron Combs struck out Ted Burton to lift Tennessee to its first-ever National Championship.
On top of its impressive offensive effort, Tennessee also got excellent pitching from each of its three arms. After Zander Sechrist set the tone with a quality start in which he allowed two runs across 6.1 innings, Kirby Connell (1.2 IP) and Nate Snead fired 2.2 shutout innings to slam the door. Although Florida State’s season came to an end, it is one that will not soon be forgotten in Tallahassee. After failing to make the ACC Tournament last season, this season felt like what will become the new norm for the Seminoles under head coach Link Jarrett.
College world series game 2
Texas A&M beat the Vols, 9-5, in Game 1 of the MCWS finals, then Tennessee completed the come-from-behind feat for the title, using late offense to top the Aggies in Game 2, 4-1, and maintaining an early lead in Game 3. With an RBI and a home run in Game 3, Dylan Dreiling won Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 MCWS. Dreiling also made history as the first player to hit a home run in all three of the MCWS finals games.
The aforementioned Moore — projected as a first-round pick in next month’s MLB Draft — has been a big part of Tennessee’s offense all year. He hit for the second cycle in College World Series history in the Vols’ CWS-opening win over Florida State. The Aggies, meanwhile, reached the Finals with their top hitter sidelined. Braden Montgomery, a potential top-10 draft pick, did not play in the CWS after injuring his leg earlier in the NCAA Tournament.
Here in the finals, they lost Game 1 and then were down 1-0 in Game 2 before getting two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings in a 4-1 win. They finish things off here having gone 3-0 in elimination games.
Tennessee has used the strategy of lefthander Chris Stamos serving as an opener for righthander AJ Causey since mid April. It’s an approach that has served it well for two months. Tennessee is 9-2 in Stamos starts and before Saturday hadn’t lost one since April 19 at Kentucky. But the duo has hit rockier times in the NCAA Tournament and especially in Omaha, where the Volunteers have fallen behind early in both of the times they turned to the pair.
“That’s why, when you play in the SEC and you play in Olsen Field in front of the 12th Man—yes, it’s the College World Series, it’s the championship series—but if you’re in our dugout it literally doesn’t feel any different. And I think that is intentional.”
